Unknown Vanishing Salt Trick???

This came from an old magician’s estate purchase. No instructions. Maker unknown.

Maybe someone knows how this was originally used and has a use for it.

There is a white plastic sleeve that fits over the salt shaker as can be seen in the picture. From a distance this will give the illusion of a full shaker of salt. How this is used is not known.
